We have all experienced pain, a very uncomfortable sensory experience, general discomfort, symptoms that make us feel a very unpleasant sensation and that affects our entire body. Therefore, it is vital to combat the symptoms of such pain through medications with an analgesic effect . For this there is Algidol . Its benefits are extensive, as it helps to improve such symptoms, especially those that have to do with the proper functioning of the immune system . Through this article you will know how the use of Algidol is an advantage for your health. Take note.
What is Algidol?
Algidol is a perfect analgesic to soothe mild or moderate pain. It is not considered a classic anti-flu, because it is a medicine that requires a prescription, unlike the other anti-flu known as “advertising pharmaceutical specialties”, and which can also be sold without a prescription. In the case of Algidol, we do not find antihistamines and / or vasoconstrictors (decongestants) in its composition, so it is not an effective alternative to treat the symptoms of rhinitis and nasal congestion.
Despite being an excellent medicine to relieve pain and fever , it is delicate to use and must be prescribed by a doctor, as not all patients can take it. Nor should it be consumed in excess because it can cause toxicity due to its components, especially paracetamol and codeine.
Composition of Algidol
Algidol is a medicine that contains Paracetamol, Codeine and Ascorbic Acid ( Vitamin C ). It belongs to the group of analgesics and antipyretics , especially for the purpose of relieving pain, whether mild or moderate, and fever symptoms. It is vital to know what each of its main components work for:
- Paracetamol: Also known as acetaminophen, it has analgesic and antipyretic properties, especially effective in treating fever and mild or moderate pain caused by joint conditions, headaches, neuralgia, minor surgical procedures, among others.
- Codeine: It is considered a narcotic. It has analgesic, antidiarrheal, sedative and antitussive effects. It works as a symptomatic treatment for unproductive coughs and colds.
- Ascorbic acid: It is an organic acid with antioxidant properties. It helps fight infection, heal wounds, and maintain healthy tissues. We can find it in all fruits and vegetables. Helps to prevent and treat vitamin C deficiency states
The other ingredients are sodium saccharin, sucrose, povidone, maltose, colloidal silica, microcrystalline cellulose, orange flavor and orange-yellow color S (E – 110).
Therefore, it can be said that Algidol is indicated to treat symptoms, or symptomatic states of pain of mild or moderate intensity.
Algidol dosage or indications
Follow the instructions for this medicine exactly. It should not be taken for more than 3 days. In case the pain does not improve after 3 days of treatment, consult your doctor in search of another alternative.

Delicate use product that should be administered only under medical supervision.
Algidol should not be consumed with other analgesic medications without first consulting a doctor. As a general rule, it is always advisable to inform the doctor if we are being treated with any other medication.
Method of administration: For its administration you must dissolve the contents of the envelope in half a glass of water. You can take this medicine before, during or after meals. As long as you do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
On the other hand, Algidol FORTE is another recommended presentation for inflammatory conditions, which present severe pain, microcontractures and functional impotence , whether of traumatic or rheumatic origin. It is also indicated for musculoskeletal conditions, whether inflammatory or not . It is recommended for pathologies such as: rheumatoid arthritis, monoarthritis, spondylarthritis, sciatica and lumbosciatica. Also as for osteoarthritis in all its forms, simple painful shoulder, chronic joint gout, cervicobrachial syndrome, neuralgia and neuritis.
Similarly, this drug should be used with caution, especially in patients with a history of ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding, since prolonged treatment can cause adrenal dysfunction. It can cause gastrointestinal disorders. It should not be administered in patients undergoing corticosteroid therapy. Among its adverse and secondary reactions we find that it can alter glucose metabolism, cause osteoporosis , insomnia , high blood pressure and increased intraocular pressure . Like common Algidol, it must be administered strictly under medical supervision .
I forgot to take Algidol, what should I do?
Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose you forgot. Simply take the missed dose when you remember and take the next corresponding doses at least 4 hours apart.
Appearance of the product and its content
This medicine comes in the form of sachets with granules for oral suspension. Each package contains, depending on its presentation, 12 or 20 aluminum and polyethylene sachets (low quantity).
How to store Algidol
Keep out of the reach of children. Do not take this medicine after the expiration date which is stated on the container. Do not throw down the drain or garbage. It must be disposed of in a safe place, preferably a pharmacy that has the corresponding container in order to care for and protect the environment.
Interactions
- Paracetamol: It can decrease the clearance of busulfan (a medicine that works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells in the body). If we exceed the indicated dose, carbamazepine can increase the hepatotoxic effect. If not, this is irrelevant. It should be administered with caution in patients with liver problems, as this drug is metabolized in the liver. Paracetamol can have interactions with the following drugs: oral anticoagulants, anticholinergics, oral contraceptives, antiepileptics, antivirals used for infections such as HIV, antituberculosis, diuretics, antiemetics (to avoid nausea and vomiting).
- Codeine: Increases excitability with tricyclic antidepressants (they affect brain chemicals thus relieving symptoms of depression). It is an enhancer of central depression. Increases the action of painkillers. There is an increased risk of respiratory depression if we mix them with other morphine painkillers. It causes constipation and intestinal obstruction if we take it with antiperistaltics. Caution should be exercised in patients with liver failure.
- Ascorbic Acid: Reduces the concentration of fluphenazine in the body, this is an antipsychotic drug for the treatment of schizophrenia and other related psychiatric disorders. Increases the bioavailability of estrogens. Reduces alcohol levels in the body. Decreases the effect of phenothiazines (a medicine to treat serious emotional and mental disorders and reduce nausea)
Precautions when ingesting Algidol
It should only be taken by those people for whom it has been prescribed by a specialist doctor. Otherwise, this would have many consequences such as those shown below:
Codeine when taken under normal circumstances, is metabolized in the liver to morphine by means of an enzyme, but at a very slow rate. This substance is what allows pain relief. A variation of this enzyme occurs, and can cause an effect to people in different ways.
In some patients, morphine is produced in very low amounts, such that it does not provide enough pain relief. However, special care should be taken with patients who rapidly metabolize a large amount of morphine, as it can cause an addictive effect.
It is not recommended to use this medicine in pregnancy or if you are looking for a baby. Much less should be consumed by breastfeeding mothers, since codeine passes into breast milk. Neither does anyone who is allergic to any component that makes up Algidol. It should not be consumed by children under 12 years of age, nor adolescents weighing less than 43kg.
In addition, it is important to know that those patients who suffer from the following situations should always consult a doctor and never self-medicate , as it can cause certain complications.
- If you suffer from anemia (decrease in red blood cells), a disease of the heart or lungs, kidney, if there is an alteration in the size of the prostate, a thyroid disease called hypothyroidism, liver failure or a gland called adrenal, you should limit its use, as long as it is the dose adjustment prescribed by the doctor. And avoid taking prolonged treatments until the doctor is consulted.
- If you are asthmatic or have some sensitivity to acetylsalicylic acid, avoid taking high doses.
- If you have ever suffered a head trauma or something similar that produces a higher intracranial pressure, or you have respiratory problems, you will have to carry this medicine with special caution. Codeine can aggravate these conditions.
- As we mentioned earlier, codeine can produce long-term mental and physical dependence, which in turn can lead to withdrawal if you don’t take it. Therefore, it is recommended that after prolonged treatment it is necessary to gradually discontinue its administration.
- It is not indicated to treat nasal congestion.
- If you are allergic to aspirin you should exercise caution. Algidol has acetylsalicylic acid in its composition , which contains the yellow-orange dye, which can cause certain allergic reactions. The most common: asthma . But this only happens when there are high doses. That is why it is necessary to follow the dosages indicated by the doctor.
- If you are taking antidepressants, oral anticoagulants, sedative antihistamines, or antacids, you should exercise caution and consult your doctor.
- Alcohol should not be consumed while being treated with this drug because it can increase the disturbance of codeine. So much so that harmful effects on the liver can be increased .
- If you suffer from diabetes or intolerance to sugars, it is advisable not to ingest Algidol as it contains sucrose.
- Activities that require concentration or dexterity should not be performed after consuming this medication. Algidol can cause drowsiness. For this reason, if possible, avoid driving.
- Algidol cannot be used for pain relief in children or adolescents after removal of tonsils or adenoids because ‘ obstructive sleep apnea syndrome’ may occur .
However, these are not the only precautions you should take.
In case you need to have a blood or urine test or examination, it is recommended to consult your doctor and perhaps suspend the treatment with Algidol for a few days. The results could be slightly affected for the determination of the following parameters:
- Glucose in blood and urine.
- Uric acid.
- Blood in stool
- Paracetamol levels in urine.
Adverse effects and side effects
Codeine can cause drowsiness, nausea, constipation, allergic skin reactions, vertigo , respiratory depression. Hematological disorders such as: Neutropenia, which is an abnormally low number of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) and leukopenia, which is the decrease of white blood cells in the blood, and can interfere with the defense against any infection. Hepatotoxicity, toxic liver disease caused by ingestion of drugs, chemical or organic compounds that cause functional or anatomical damage to the liver. This can occur if we exceed the dose of paracetamol greater than 6 grams per day.
A high dose of ascorbic acid can promote the formation of kidney stones. Paracetamol can cause malaise, increased levels of liver transaminases , and hypotension. In rare cases it can cause a simple skin rash or hives (hives), hypoglycaemia (reduced levels of glucose in the blood), hemolytic anemia (decreased red blood cells), thrombocytopenia (decreased platelets in the blood) and effects adverse kidney disease.
In case such symptoms occur, it is advisable to go to the doctor. It should be noted that this occurs in 1 in 100 patients.
