Psychoactive substances usually bring with them a series of negative consequences for the physical and mental health of an individual. Their abuse can generate different types of hallucinations and delusions, in addition to various psychopathologies, such as personality disorders and amotivational syndrome.
What is amotivational syndrome?
Amotivational syndrome is a mental condition that is linked to a lack of motivation , passivity, indifference, and an unwillingness to contribute to social events.
This syndrome is seen regularly in habitual cannabis smokers or users of other types of psychoactive drugs. It is accompanied by alterations in cognitive functions such as memory , perception, attention and common sense.
Causes of amotivational syndrome
The indifference and lack of motivation experienced by those who suffer from this syndrome is caused by an external condition. Although many people have denied that the active use of cannabis develops this syndrome, research affirms that the continuous use of this drug for a prolonged period can lead to apathy, amotivation, dullness, lethargy and impaired judgment, that is, the amotivational syndrome classic.
Some scientists have suggested that long-term cannabis use induces amotivational syndrome, however there has been some speculation that active cannabis use is not the direct cause of the amortivational syndrome . These speculations are due to the fact that only a low percentage of people who use cannabis manifest this syndrome.
Most people, although they present some of the symptoms of this clinical picture, do not experience it as a psychopathology, therefore, it is believed that biological factors directly interfere in this syndrome , and cannabis could function as a trigger of the same.
Symptoms of amotivational syndrome
Some of the symptoms experienced by those who suffer from the clinical picture of amotivational syndrome are the following:
- Lack of concentration
- Loss of energy
- Emotional fatigue
- Lack of empathy
- Loss of self esteem
- Lack of motivation
- Indifference to social interactions
- Lack of self-criticism
- Loss of perception
- Episodes of schizophrenia can occur
- Lack of comprehension
- Memory loss
- Episodes of anxiety and depression
How can amotivational syndrome be treated?
Treatments for amotivational syndrome are aimed at alleviating and reducing its symptoms, providing preventive measures.
If we are faced with a person who suffers from this syndrome , the first thing we should do is talk to them about the consequences of drug addiction and encourage them to stop using them. If this does not work, we should seek help from a mental health professional, who will guide us through this process.
Psychoanalysis and cognitive behavioral therapy are also offered as treatment for people with this syndrome. This can help them deal with their emotional problems, reduce the stress and anxiety they are experiencing.
If the patient is chronically addicted to psychoactive substances, it will be necessary for him to attend special rehabilitation therapy . This will aim to eradicate the addiction and help the patient to completely lose the habit.
