Ephedrine products pose a serious health risk, according to the FDA

Dietary supplements containing ephedrine can pose a serious health risk and even cause death in some people, according to a report by the US drug agency (the ‘Food and Drug Administration’, FDA).

The FDA urges that recommended dosages of these supplements be established and that products containing ephedrine are appropriately labeled with accurate information, in order to avoid risks.

The report is based on a review of studies prepared by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (USA), in which 140 analyzes of the adverse effects of supplements containing ephedrine are analyzed.

In the analyzed studies, the researchers found that only 31% of these accounted for people affected by ephedrine, a total of 43. Of these 43 people, three died, seven were affected by permanent injuries and four or more required medical treatment continuous.

The most serious effects of ephedrine in these people included heart attacks (two fatal and three with brain damage and permanent disability), four strokes and ten cases of hypertension. In a second group included in the analysis – that of people with physical symptoms possibly related to ephedrine products – the number of deaths rose to 10 out of 87 people, and permanent disabilities rose to 13 out of 87.

Researchers have called for large-scale controlled studies to quantify the harms of ephedrine and the products that contain it and to identify people who may be susceptible to its side effects, thus establishing what the dose may be. recommended of this product. Supplements containing ephedrine are very popular in the United States.

According to Health, the use of ephedrine is not authorized in Spain as a compound in dietary supplements. This medicine is only approved in Spain for use as a bronchodilator, in combination with other compounds for the treatment of bronchial spasms and obstruction of respiratory passages in chronic bronchitis or bronchial asthma as well as in allergic processes.
