Gang stage or realism

The gang or realism stage is the fourth stage in the development of a child’s drawing . This occurs between the ages of nine and twelve approximately .

In this period, the child represents the experience they have had with the object they are drawing,  since realism is given by what that child experienced with that particular object. You can begin to represent your subjects from multiple points of view and multiple baselines are often displayed.

Already at this age children have the ability to think logically, which allows them to find multiple ways to solve problems. They realize that they are members of society , which is made up of people with the same characteristics.

Children in this phase are eager to conform and are very sensitive to teasing or criticism from peers. They begin to understand that more is achieved in a group than alone, and in turn there is a marked division between the sexes, with the interests of each appearing , as in men watching action movies and in girls love movies. What accounts for a more social and not so egocentric thinking and behavior .

What does the child draw in the realism stage?

In this stage they combine real elements of their internal subjective psychological world and their objective view of the external world . The scheme that he had learned of the human figure in the previous stage is no longer adequate, since now they will represent greater differences between genders, with new elements intervening in that representation.

There is still no clear intention to show shadows, light, folds or wrinkles, but on the contrary the graphics appear with a certain rigidity or hardness , which can vary from a rigid color-object relationship to a characterization of color. The color is true to life in the drawings of this stage, for example: they can paint the blue sky and the blue river but with different tones; elements of fantasy and illusion can be included in the way of making the world.

In space , perspective and depth appear, as well as perfecting the relationships between the objects that it graphs , since it will go from the baseline to the discovery of the different planes, such as the representation of different baselines in which it draws objects and reliefs that show different planes . That is why the sky line will descend and be located as the horizon line.

The experience will leave traces on the subject and the affective significance that this subject gives it will be captured in the drawing .

When does the child’s drawing represent an alert symptom?

Children’s drawings are generally not a cause for alarm. They are often simply artistic expressions and can represent a variety of emotions, lived situations or themes that are explored and then forgotten. However, at this stage the child already has a sufficiently developed moral conscience about what is right and what is wrong. Sometimes the graphics made tend to represent hidden wishes that could be realized. If the child or already pre-adolescent draws violent situations, with firearms or other threatening elements, or if this is combined with risky behaviors and depression , it can be an indicator that he needs therapeutic help. For this, psychotherapy may be the most appropriate option.

It is necessary to consult with a therapist about the symptoms that the child presents. This will analyze your behavior and try to find the underlying cause of it to achieve a more effective treatment.
