How to make a natural hand sanitizer

Summer is the time when we spend the most time with children on the streets. Park, beach, pool, mountain … At any time we may need to wash our hands and there is no source nearby or we do not have soap to disinfect. Some people are simply concerned about cleanliness and well-being, while others are more concerned about germs. For both types of people, we have the solution! Nothing better than a natural remedy available to everyone.

What’s on the market?

Beauty is also in the hands, although sometimes we neglect them a bit. A clean and cared for hand is beautiful, and it brings a certain well-being to know them clean and protected from bacteria.

There are multiple brands of disinfectants on the market in a wide variety of presentations. The problem is when as a result of their use they become harmful to health. Since these products (fragrances, triclosan, parabens, formaldehyde, etc.) are composed of a large amount of alcohol and aggressive chemical components that, despite eliminating bacteria, can have a violent reaction on the skin.

So… what product do I use?

As simple as the manufacture of a natural hand sanitizer that we can make at home in less than five minutes. Making homemade hand sanitizer is quick, cheap, and very easy. In addition, we can use it as many times as we want, since the products used are natural and, therefore, not aggressive.

It is also a cheap remedy suitable for the whole family . There are different ways to do it, depending in part on the users, since they could have an allergy to a component or, simply, that the smell of an ingredient is unpleasant or strong. The common base is antibacterial elements like aloe vera gel and tea tree oil.

Tea tree oil is a famous product both in cosmetics and natural therapies. Its natural antiseptic and antimicrobial power helps fight viruses, fungi and bacteria. Its preservative nature also makes our home remedy stay in perfect condition for longer. For all these advantages, it is not necessary to use more than a few drops.

How to make a natural disinfectant

Next, we offer different ways to make our own homemade disinfectant by varying some ingredients . All these products, 100% natural and organic, can be easily found in pharmacies and herbalists.

As an important fact, it is necessary to verify the origin and quality of the oils, since sometimes cheaper alternatives are offered that do not really have all their properties. And of course, we should not confuse oils with aromatic essences, since although the appearance is the same, both products are not related.

Simple hand sanitizer with aloe vera

  • Eight tablespoons of aloe vera gel.
  • Sixteen drops of tea tree oil.
  • Ten drops of lavender essential oil *.

(* Optional: lavender oil can be substituted for other essential oils such as thyme, lemon or orange)

We mix all the ingredients in a bowl and pour the mixture into a spray can. Before using we just have to shake the bottle and we already have our natural hand sanitizer.

This same preparation can be done either with a gel already prepared from aloe vera, or using leaves of the plant. A leaf is opened and with a spoon we extract the gel from its interior. Next, we mix with the oils and shake, beating it if necessary.

Hand sanitizer with vitamins

  • Half (½) tablespoon of witch hazel.
  • Two tablespoons of coconut oil .
  • Ten drops of tea tree oil.
  • 10 drops of lavender oil (replaceable with lemon or orange oil)
  • Ten drops of vitamin E.

All the ingredients are poured into a container and mixed with a spoon. Once done, we put it in a little bottle with a dispenser or spray and we will also shake it before use.

The difference between this natural hand sanitizer and the previous one lies mainly in the consistency, since by not using aloe vera, it remains in liquid form. Instead, we use coconut oil, which has antibacterial properties and is moisturizing.

Alcohol hand sanitizer

  • Two tablespoons of ethyl alcohol (from a medicine cabinet, 96 °).
  • A quarter (¼) cup of aloe vera gel.
  • One tablespoon of glycerin .
  • Two tablespoons of witch hazel.
  • Ten drops of essential oil (lavender, lemon, etc.).

We mix the ingredients until the texture is unified and they form a gel and it is ready to put it in a small bottle with a dispenser and use it. Like the rest of the preparations, after use it does not need rinsing.

Glycerin (available in pharmacies) helps prevent alcohol from drying your hands excessively. The number of drops of essential oil can vary depending on the intensity that we want to give our disinfectant, since alcohol has a very strong smell that in principle could overshadow the essences.
