Oxygen therapy

The oxygen therapy is a treatment by which a person receives more oxygen into your body through a respirator . It can also be applied in the field of personal care and beauty and well-being, with excellent results to increase the flexibility, firmness and tone of the skin . Its effects are multiplied when combined with other aesthetic treatments to rejuvenate and firm the dermis.

Indications

People with health problems related to low oxygen levels in the blood experience labored breathing and extreme fatigue, particularly after walking or coughing. Therefore, when you breathe air with oxygen, the levels of this in the blood increase and the feeling of fatigue disappears.

There are certain ailments that may require the use of oxygen therapy. Among them are emphysema, chronic bronchitis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) .

This group also includes certain heart problems, obesity-related hypoventilation, severe asthma , conditions that affect the nerves and muscles or the rib cage, and cystic fibrosis.

Use in the field of beauty

Oxygen therapy applied to the field of beauty has proven to be an efficient method to increase the flexibility, hydration, smoothness and tone of the skin. Among its greatest advantages is that it does not cause any pain and has excellent results, because it favors oxygenation and blood microcirculation . This makes the skin firmer and smoother.

Contraindications

Oxygen therapy should not be used to relieve dyspnea or shortness of breath , if oxygen levels are normal. In these cases, the treatment could harm and even delay a diagnosis of the causes for which these breathing difficulties have occurred.

Smoking is contraindicated , not only because it can reduce or nullify the effects of treatment, but because tobacco is one of the main causes of many diseases related to breathing, heart and lungs.

Types of Oxygen Therapy

There are several ways to receive this therapy , depending on how the oxygen is administered.

  • Tube placed under the nose (nasal cannula).
  • Face mask placed over the nose and mouth.
  • Tube placed in the mouth and in the windpipe.
  • The tube or mask is attached to a ventilation machine.

Diagnostic tests

If the doctor considers that oxygen therapy is recommended for a patient, he will ask for an evaluation of the amount of oxygen in the blood . This is done by taking a blood sample from the earlobe or wrist. Another way is through a sensor on the finger (pulse oximetry test).

The patient may also be asked to breathe into a device called a spirometer during a lung function test.

If a low blood oxygen level is observed, a regular treatment of oxygen therapy will most likely be recommended. This is when a medical specialist calculates the amount of oxygen the patient needs and for how long it should be administered .

In addition, the doctor informs about the forms of oxygen administration, which can be carried out with various types of devices and different routes, such as the aforementioned cannulas that are inserted through the nose, masks in the nose and mouth or a device called a hyperbaric chamber, which alters air pressure.

Finally, know that this technique helps many people to lead a normal life, avoiding symptoms of extreme tiredness or fatigue . Oxygen therapy also helps prevent damage to the heart and brain , which can be caused by low oxygen levels in the blood. It will always be the doctor who indicates when and in what quantity the oxygen should be supplied.
