The vaginal candidiasis is a vaginal infection caused by an overgrowth of yeast in the genital area. It is a very common condition in women with itching, burning, and thick white vaginal discharge. Its symptoms are similar to those of other vaginal infections and sexually transmitted diseases, so it is advisable to consult with a medical specialist and identify the origin of said infection.
Causes of vaginal yeast infection
Vaginal yeast infection is caused by the fungus Candida albicans , which is found in small amounts in areas of the body, such as the vagina, digestive tract, mouth, and skin. When this microorganism grows and multiplies suddenly and excessively in the genital area, a yeast infection occurs. Although any woman can get this vaginal yeast infection, she is more likely to develop it if:
- Antibiotic medications are being taken to treat other infections, which can destroy bacteria that keep Candida albicans growth under control .
- You are overweight.
- You are pregnant.
- You have diabetes and your blood sugar levels are not controlled.
- The immune system is weakened, such as due to HIV.
- Vaginal douches, perfumes, harsh soaps or deodorants are used in the intimate area.
- Very tight clothing made of synthetic fabrics is used.
- Hormonal contraceptives that contain high doses of estrogens are used.
Symptoms of vaginal yeast infection
Vaginal candidiasis causes the following symptoms to appear, these can vary and be more or less mild depending on the patient:
- Abnormal vaginal discharge or discharge: heavier, odorless, thick, watery and white discharge, similar in appearance to cottage cheese or cottage cheese.
- Itching and burning on the lips and in the vagina.
- Redness and inflammation of the vulva.
- Tenderness in the vaginal area.
- Pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse.
- Painful urination
Diagnosis of vaginal yeast infection
The doctor performs a pelvic exam to look for and confirm the symptoms mentioned above. Also, you can take a small sample of the vaginal discharge using a cotton swab. The sample will later be analyzed under a microscope in order to check if there is an excessive growth of the Candida albicans fungus , which is responsible for the infection.
Treatment of vaginal yeast infection
Vaginal candidiasis requires treatment with antifungal medications , which act against the overgrowth of the Candida fungus and prevent the appearance of symptoms. These types of medications are available in different formats, such as vaginal creams, suppositories or tablets and oral tablets, most of which can be purchased without a prescription. However, it is always advisable to consult a doctor or gynecologist and it is only advisable to treat vaginal yeast infection yourself if the symptoms are mild, if you are not pregnant or are not concerned about the possibility of suffering from other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). ).
The prescribed treatment will have to be applied or taken for 1 to 7 days, depending on the medical recommendation, and in no case should it be suspended beforehand even if the symptoms have disappeared. When the vaginal infection is more severe, treatment may last up to 14 days. If at the end of said treatment, the symptoms remain, you should consult your doctor or gynecologist again.
Prevent vaginal yeast infection
There are certain steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of developing a vaginal yeast infection:
- Avoid douching and the use of scented, aggressive or irritating toiletries. These kill the good bacteria that protect the vagina from possible infections, such as yeast infection.
- Always keep the vaginal area clean and dry. It should be washed with plenty of water and a specific intimate soap for this delicate part of the body.
- Change sanitary pads and tampons frequently.
- Do not wear synthetic underwear and prefer cotton.
- Wear baggy pants.
- Take off your swimwear and sportswear as soon as possible.
- After using the bathroom, always clean the intimate area from front to back.
- If you have to take antibiotics and you suffer from vaginal yeast infection frequently, ask your doctor about the possibility of using antifungal medications to prevent infection.
- If you have diabetes, make sure your blood glucose levels are perfectly controlled.
Recurrent vaginal yeast infection
5% of women suffer from recurrent vaginal candidiasis, that is, they have four or more fungal infections of this type in a year. This condition is called recurrent candidal vulvovaginitis (VVCR) and although it can occur in any woman, it is more common in those who are diabetic or have a weakened immune system. Given this, it is necessary to put yourself in the hands of specialists and start a more lasting treatment, since antifungal medications may have to be taken for a period of approximately six months.
In other cases, women with vaginal yeast infection are seen every month just when their menstrual period is about to arrive. This is due to the changes experienced by the pH of the vagina and, therefore, the doctor may advise the application or taking of fungicidal medication every month to prevent infection and prevent symptoms from developing.
Is vaginal yeast infection spread?
Vaginal yeast infection is not a sexually transmitted disease, as it can develop without having sex. However, it is possible that it is transmitted to the couple when having vaginal, anal or oral sex. For this reason, it is recommended to suspend sexual intercourse until the infection has been completely cured and the partner at risk undergoes the appropriate examinations and is put in treatment if they present any symptoms of genital candidiasis. Men with yeast infections may experience an itchy rash on the skin of the penis; in males, men who have not been circumcised or who have diabetes have a higher risk of getting it.
