The embarrassments and the hangovers

The month of December could be considered, for many reasons, as the month of sins, while the month of January would be the month of repentance. But … who has not committed a sin at the Christmas holidays? Christmas excesses invite us to reflect on indulgence and hangovers.

Empachos and hangovers take a special role during the Christmas holidays.

Empachos

We speak of empacho when we make a meal or a dinner with a quantity of foods greater than what we are used to, and that are rich in fats, sugars, and alcohol, thus subjecting our digestive system to extra work for which it does not He’s prepared.

The symptoms of a fullness are mainly centered on a great sensation of weight and burning in the pit of the stomach, below the sternum, which is accompanied by flatulence, nausea, regurgitation, cold sweating and even vomiting as a consequence of the stomach’s incompetence to the digestion of ingested food.

The correct treatment of empacho consists of an absolute diet for 12 or 24 hours, that is to say, letting our digestive system rest, followed by a diet based on soft and liquid foods in the form of water, fruit juice and infusions, avoiding the tea and coffee. Conventional antacids are recommended, while sodium bicarbonate is not recommended, especially in those people who suffer from high blood pressure , due to its sodium content, which, as we know, must be restricted in these cases.

Hangovers

On the other hand, hangovers are considered as the bill that our body passes to us after ingesting large amounts of alcohol, or not so large amounts in people who are not used to it.

The hangover is noted by the presence of a strong headache or headache, which is accompanied by severe dry mouth, nausea, vomiting and sometimes even diarrhea, and of course with a clear reduction in reflexes in front of the wheel of the vehicle. .

In this case, it is best to eat a soft diet for 24 hours, with plenty of water-based liquids, milk (cold or hot, depending on your taste), natural juices and hot infusions. But we must avoid taking Acetyl Salicylic Acid (Aspirin), because it can erode the gastric mucosa, which will already be somewhat damaged by the effect of alcohol.

It is better to take another type of painkiller in this case, such as those that have Paracetamol in their composition .

Treatment of binges and hangovers

  • Absolute diet during the first 12 hours
  • Soft diet and plenty of fluids for the next 24-48 hours.
  • Water-based liquids, natural juices, infusions.
  • No to Aspirin. Not baking soda.
  • Use other pain relievers and other antacids.
